The phenomenal Cape York Peninsula – which is located along the northern tip of Far North Queensland – is now one of the world’s last remaining wilderness areas and is recognised for its environmental significance. With its west coast flanked by the Gulf of Carpentaria, the east by the Coral Sea and the relatively flat interior covered in lush tropical rainforest and eucalypt savannahs, the Peninsula gives off a tropical island hideaway atmosphere. Access to the Peninsula is usually via Cairns and whether you reach Cape York Peninsula by plane or over land, you’ll find an untouched beauty that’s impossible to find anywhere else in the country. The historic town of Cooktown is usually the first stop visitors make, before branching out and visiting areas, such as Lakefield National Park, Iron Range National Park, Chili Beach, Weipa, Twin Falls, Thursday Island and of course, Cape York – Australia’s most northerly tip!
